John Doan's long-awaited recording project of Fernando Sor's Harpolyre music is out!
(I know, not a "true HG," but close as you get).
Available at his site and Harp Guitar Music.

Also - the Primal Twang DVD is out and available through the PT web site - unfortunately they aren't yet doing wholesale for me to carry it.  There is great concert footage of John playing both harp guitar and harpolyre, plus a very nice interview.

Fred, I met this individual you speak of (let's call him JD) at the Montreal guitar show a couple weeks ago. I think he was genuinely surprised that I knew of him and about a couple of his instruments. We talked about how I'd thought long and hard over your Plaid Pantry but in the end I knew I could not compete. He's seems very happy with it but left the door open that perhaps, just maybe, someday in the future it might be available...
Hmmmm, now I'm curious about who played what and when will this CD be out?

Stephen - as to WHAT:

As to WHO:  I never got permission to mention names....

As to HOW: Look at the photo and YOU figure it out!

No, I have nothing to do with this project, but expect it will be what they call "avant garde"...

That's a LOT of strings and lots of fingers going in (I would safely guess) lots of directions!

Why so secretive about 'JD' (Jeff Doctorow), the owner of the two instruments?

The listings on the new CD sound interesting. How comes Wahlberg is playing a Merrill harp guitar, what happened to his Eddie Vila one?

I hope if there is another CD that there will be some European harp guitarists on it. Talking of which, Jason Carter is taking the harp guitar to new places with concerts in Afghanistan and North Korea.

What price are the tickets for this years Gathering?

All the best
Steve

  • Not sure Steve - Jeff likes to keep a low profile for some reason.
  • Andy borrowed the Merrill from a local friend. Note that it's the first CD with two Carlsons!
  • As far as European players, I had planned (and was excited) to present Philippe Fouquet to the world at large on this CD, but his track had insurmountable technical difficulties - a shame as his playing is very expressive and emotional.  I've already been talking to Jason (thanks to your introduction) about coming to a Gathering and future recordings - he's excited about both (probably not this year).
  • HGG6 Registration Form coming shortly (please be patient). We believe it will be $90 advance/$125 ar the door, not sure about spouses.  A decision the board made after HGG5 was that everyone would be required to pay for registration (including the pope, can you believe it?!), with presenters and performers receiving honorariums afterwards based on their participation and travel as in previous years.  This is necessary to keep the fund and the event in the black.

Stephen,

So you got to meet J-Doc in the flesh!  I think he said he was giving a presentation (at the Montreal show) on collecting high end guitars....did you catch that?

As for the CD with Doctorow's Carlson and Manzer HGs on it, I don't know much about it.  I've gotten into trouble before mouthing off prematurely about other folks projects, so I'm just playing it safe.  I assume when it comes out I'll find out and will spread the word here.

Great picture, though, huh? (Thanks, Gregg).

And I'm waiting breathlessly for my copies of Gregg's new compilation CD to arrive; obviously I'm tickled to have two of my creatures represented, played by masters.  Can't wait!

Fred

No I haven't met J-Doc. His name comes up as owning the Picasso on a number of websites. He is credited for lending the Flying Dream and Picasso on The Museum Of Making Music web site. It is difficult to keep a low profile with the Internet.

I have never been to the Montreal Guitar Show. Will you be coming to the gathering this year Fred?

Take care
Steve

Hi Fred,
Sorry, I missed his talk. It was on the Friday and I had to work. I live about 4 1/2 hours west of Montreal and didn't leave for the show until early Saturday morning. He's a very interesting guy and I found him quite approachable. Unlike some collectors I've known he didn't try to overwhelm me with a huge list of everything he owns.
Steve Sedgwick is correct though. In today's world of high speed internet, instant messaging and the like it's difficult to go un-noticed. I also agree with you, love the photo!

For those who no longer own a CD player and/or can live without my spectacular packaging and extensive liner notes/photo album booklet, Harp Guitar Dreams is up on iTunes, Emusic, and presumably elsewhere.  Enjoy it before HGG6, where we will be presenting "The Making of HGD" in a 9-member panel.

More importantly, will there be special autographed copies for those who can't quite make it to HGGVI this year? Or maybe a special DVD for Member's Only on "The Making of Harp Guitar Dreams"?

Either way..... Hat's off to all involved with the project! Some great music!!!

Note to the Pope: Yes, I still need to order my copy.

Hmm......One of two possibilities here. We missed something in the translation, or, the proverbial carrot is being dangled ever closer to lure me to Portland.

Very cool, Gregg.  Congratulations to all of the contributors.

I must point out, however, that the linked document falils to depict that handsome contributor.

I'll have to run out and buy a copy. Maybe there's another page to the article that shows the artist Gregg is talking about.

As SB mentioned at his workshop this weekend, when I showed up with harp guitar in hand..."See, we're taking over the world!"

Adam Carney just released his self-produced debut CD - now available at Harp Guitar Music.  He's proved to be a quick study on the instrument (adapting in just 3 years) and pulls off an entire live solo CD on a Lark in the Morning, no less!
